A statement about Jon Ruben

Statement from St Peter’s Church Ruddington

regarding the crimes of Jon Ruben

The abuse of children and vulnerable people is devastating, and is especially shocking when it happens in places which should offer care, safety and protection.

On February 6th, Jon Ruben, a former member of our Parochial Church Council and church volunteer, was sentenced for horrific crimes against children and others at Stathern Children’s Holiday Fund Camp. We are shocked and appalled that a member of our church could betray the trust of so many and commit these terrible offences. He deceived his victims, their families and his community.

We are praying for the children and families who have suffered this abuse, and for all who have been affected within the wider community.

We take our safeguarding responsibilities very seriously. Although the Church of England safeguarding procedures have been consistently followed, we recognise that Jon Ruben’s role in church may have allowed him to present as trustworthy in the wider community. We have conducted a full review of our safeguarding procedures and will continue to be vigilant.

If you have been affected by what has happened, support is available via our Diocesan Safeguarding Team (email: safeguarding@southwell.anglican.org or phone 01636 817200) or through the independent service, Safe Spaces (Website: safespacesenglandandwales.org.uk; Email: safespaces@firstlight.org.uk, or phone 0300 303 1056).

You are welcome to contact to the Vicar of St Peter’s, Rev Andrew Buchanan (rev_buchanan@hotmail.com or phone 0115 921 4522) or to contact our Parish Safeguarding Officer (ruddsafeguarding@gmail.com).
